Transition from viscous fingers to compact displacement during unstable drainage in porous media

چکیده
The immiscible displacement of a viscous fluid by less one in porous medium is known to be unstable and often results dendritic fingering patterns, where the pressure gradient screened internally only advanced invading parts grow. We present experiments media, systematically varying imposed injection ($P$) viscosity ratio ($M$) defending fluid. A crossover more stable compact invasion structures found for higher $P$ $M$. This regime onset observed even $M<{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$. show that not this patterns exhibit rich internal flow dynamics.

Dynamics of stable viscous displacement in porous media
Immiscible displacement of one fluid by another fluid in porous media has important applications in a wide range of different technologies. Most often mentioned is hydrology and and oil recovery. From a theoretical point of view, the displacement process is very complex and hard to describe in detail. Especially, much attention has been paid to the rich variety of displacement structures that i...
متن کاملGas-Water Flow Behaviour During Mutual Displacement in Porous Media
During oilfield development, there exist multi-cycle gas–water mutual displacement processes. This means that a cycling process such as water driving gas–gas driving water–water driving gas is used for the operation of injection and production in a single well (such as foam huff and puff in single well or water-bearing gas storage). In this paper, by using coreand micro-pore scales model, we st...
متن کاملA Numerical Study of Capillary and Viscous Drainage in Porous Media
This paper concentrates on the flow properties when one fluid displaces another fluid in a two-dimensional (2D) network of pores and throats. We consider the scale where individual pores enter the description and we use a network model to simulate the displacement process. We study the interplay between the pressure build up in the fluids and the displacement structure in drainage. We find that...
متن کاملViscous stabilization of the invasion front in drainage displacement
We investigate the stabilization mechanisms due to viscous forces of the invasion front in drainage displacement in two dimensional porous media using a network simulator. We find that in horizontal displacement the capillary pressure difference between two different points along the front vary linearly as function of height separation in the direction of the displacement. We conclude that exis...
متن کاملAnalytical and variational numerical methods for unstable miscible displacement flows in porous media
The miscible displacement of one fluid by another in a porous medium has received considerable attention in subsurface, environmental and petroleum engineering applications. When a fluid of higher mobility displaces another of lower mobility, unstable patterns referred to as viscous fingering may arise. Their physical and mathematical study has been the object of numerous investigations over th...
